Glyconutrient Questions and Answers

What is a glyconutrient?
Glyconutrients are plant saccharides (sugars) that provide support for the immune system. Saccharides are necessary for the body’s creation of glycoforms, the structures on cell surfaces used to “talk” to other cells.

Why are glyconutrients considered necessary nutrients?
Glyconutrients play a key role in supporting your immune system and promoting effective cell-to-cell communication.

What is cellular communication, and why is it important to support?
Recent scientific research has shown that eight simple sugars (monosaccharides)—most of which are no longer found in abundance in the standard modern diet—form virtual “words of life” at the cellular level. These sugars combine with proteins and fats to create glycoforms that coat the surface of nearly every cell in the body. Glycoforms function as cellular recognition molecules that communicate the messages a body needs to function in health. These messages directly affect your natural defense (immune) and endocrine (glandular) systems, in addition to supporting proper organ and system function.

I am allergic to aloe vera. Can I take products which contain these sugars?
Individuals who are allergic to aloe are usually allergic to the ingredients in the yellow sap of the plant. Check  the product does not contain this yellow sap. Check that the manufacturing process extracts and stabilizes the polysaccharide molecule found within fresh, then freeze-dried, aloe.

I am on a blood thinner, are there products for sale in the United Kingdom that I should not take?
People on anticoagulant therapy need to avoid vitamin K, which aids in blood clotting. It may be advisable to avoid products with naturally occurring vitamin K.

What do I take for a particular illness?
Nurtitional supplements are not drugs. They are not represented as a treatment for any disease. They are designed to help promote good health. If you have a medical condition, consult your doctor or therapist about the use of these products.

Are the products containing glyconutrients safe for sugar-sensitive individuals?
Check that the product contains plant polysaccharides designed to provide the monosaccharides necessary for cell-to-cell communication. These products should not contain sucrose, whihc is a disaccharide consisting of glucose and fructose, normally called table sugar.

Can people with major health challenges take supplements?
Anyone, regardless of their state of health, can benefit from improved nutrition. There are no special concerns among people with major health challenges that should keep them from taking good quality products.

What are free radicals?
Toxins such as pollution, radiation, cigarette smoke and herbicides on cells can create free radicals. Stress and poor food can also contribute to the creation of free radicals. Free radicals attack atoms by stealing electrons, making these atoms unstable. When free radicals steal electrons from an atom, the atom is unstable and becomes a free radical searching out electrons. This chain reaction can lead to the acceleration of the aging process. Antioxidants reduce free radicals by contributing electrons to maintain cell stability. Look for a antoioxidant that is designed to protect the water and fat soluble portions of cells from free radical attacks.

Why are antioxidants important?
Antioxidant-rich nutrients help protect your cells against the harmful effects of toxins, environmental stress, poor diet and oxidative stress. Antioxidants also act as free radical scavengers.

What is the endocrine system and why is it important?
The endocrine system is the system that maintains hormonal balance in the body. A well-functioning endocrine system helps support the body’s efficient burning of fat, helps support the body’s natural recovery from physical stress, and works in harmony with the body’s immune system.

What are phytoestrogens and why are they important?
Phytoestrogens (PEs) are natural estrogens found in plants. PEs bind to the estrogen receptors in the body, delivering a slight amount of estrogen.

What is dioscorea?
Dioscorea is wild yam root that provides phytosterols. Phytosterols are plant sterols that can help your body recover from physical overexertion. Dioscorea helps support the body’s natural recovery.

What are probiotics, and why are they important?
Probiotics are dietary living microorganisms that contribute to the health and balance of the intestinal tract. Food sterilization and preservatives may decrease the levels of these beneficial bacteria in your foods. Probiotics keep your digestive system running smoothly by breaking down food and processing waste.

What is beneficial microflora?
Microflora is the bacteria (probiotics) in the digestive system that help maintain healthy intestines.

What is the difference between a probiotic and a gastric enzyme?
A probiotic is designed to help regulate the balance of microflora in your intestines through probiotics. The gstric enzymes help improve digestion of carbohydrates, proteins and fats.  They can both be taken at the same time.

What are enzymes, and why are they important?
Enzymes are the proteins that set off chemical reactions in the body. Some enzymes help to ensure that food is broken down and passes rapidly through the digestive tract.

What are amylase and lactase, and why are they important?
Amylase is an enzyme that breaks down starch. Lactase is an enzyme that breaks down lactose. These vegetable based enzymes designed to support normal healthy digestion of gluten proteins.

What is pectin and why is it beneficial?
Citrus pectin helps support glucose utilization by the body and also supports immune function.

I have heard that creatine can be dangerous to athletes. Some Pre-workout sports drink contain creatine, is this a problem?
Creatine is a natural substance found in the body. It is supplied through the diet and is also produced by the body from other amino acids. On a daily basis, the body uses two grams of creatine. Some concern has been expressed over the safety of creatine supplementation. Whereas many athletes take amounts up to twenty grams per day, check  that the amount of creatine in a sports drink is approximately equal to a serving of meat or fish, so that it is more in line with a well-balanced diet and poses no health concerns to the user.

What is lactic acid, and how does it affect my body?
Lactic acid is the chemical produced during anaerobic energy production which decreases muscle performance. Lactase builds up in the muscle during exercise when the muscles are not receiving the adequate amount of oxygen. Supplements can help the body clear itself of lactic acid allowing an increase in workout intensity and duration.
